I am happy to announce that I was one of four recipients for the July Artist Accelerator Grant from the Arts Commission! A CASH award for just about anything an artist would want/need to pursue their craft, in my case some engraving wheels for my lathe!
I bought this lathe in 2012. It is an old 'Sommer and Macha' lathe; solid cast iron and battleship grey. This beast came out of a basement in Chicago and was transported to Toledo along with several other pieces of large cold working equipment. At the time, I wasn't even sure if it ran and the shaft and bearings needed an update. A few years later I had a new shaft turned and got some new bearings. The lathe got moved to our home when we bought it and sat under plastic for another year or two. Finally I happened across a motor with controller at the right price and I was almost in business.
In early 2016, I finally put all the pieces together and gave it a test. It all worked and the shaft tu...
Back in June, I had the pleasure of participating in a day of glass for the Arts Commission's Hot Shots! 12 artists over the course of about 12 hours made 12 pieces in collaboration with 12 different area bars/restaurants. The idea is that the pieces will be on display at the participating locations leading up to the Month of Glass in October, then there will be a Hot Shots auction of all the objects! Pretty sweet. The day of glass was incredible; blowing glass all day long with friends, it was just like being back a BG. I was paired with Tony Packo's and made a pickle jar with engraved labels in homage to the real thing. Check out the photos courtesy of Tom Brooks.
Water or glass? Check out some new coldworking that I have been doing for good friend, Matt Paskiet. The surface of this object has been cut and polished to create ripples and dapples of light on the colors below, just like sunlight through clear water.
Thanks to everyone who came out these last few months for the third Thursday Art Loops. The weather and a downtown packed with activities have made sales a bit sparse, so I hope we get some good weather and a buying crowd for the next one on July 21!
What else...UT's Art on the Mall! I was accepted to this famous show and cannot wait! I've been working on my display and will have some new items for this show. Be sure to come check it out, there will be t...
Im pleased say that I will have a spot at Packo's at the Park for Art Loop Thursdays through September. What a fun location, right across from the ballpark and close to plenty of good food and drink! More information about the Art Loop and schedule here.
Had a wild time this past weekend at the Sandusky County Art and Music Festival in Freemont Ohio! Thanks to George from the Strand Theatre and all the other organizers, vendors, and new friends!
*I also recently acquired some new molds that I plan on using for new work for both shows and galleries. Touch of Light Studio in Ferndale MI is liquidating after many years in the biz and he has lots of used stuff in good condition at the right price!
